Regarding the diamonds, it is true that diamonds and other precious gems have been used to finance various wars, primarily in Africa, since they are untraceable and easily concealed (these qualities makes them easy to smuggle and sell). However there are now diamonds which are traceable and verifiable as conflict-free. For example, diamonds mined, cut and polished in northern Canada are each given a unique serial number that is etched microscopically onto the diamond by a laser (see http://www.rareinnature.com/buying/why_certified). This serial number etched on the diamond makes it traceable and verifiable as a conflict-free diamond.
So if you want to buy diamonds with a clear conscience, you just need to find a retailer that sells diamonds that can be verified as conflict-free.
